NBA All-Star Weekend 2016 Review:
(Published on 2/16/16)
This All-Star Weekend is going to be one to be remembered. A record breaking weekend filled with excitement, suprises, fun, and heartfelt moments.
Zach Lavine can literally fly. He can really put on a show. He won his second dunk contest in a row as well the Rising Stars challenge.
This year’s rookie class just keeps proving how great they are. Probably the best since ’03. Karl-Anthony Towns winning the skills challenge. The first big man to win the skills challenge. A 6’11” Center beating a 5’10” Point Guard in a challenge based on passing, shooting, and dribbling. Devin Booker, after beating James Harden and , puts himself in the 3-point shooting contest with Klay Thompson and Steph Curry. That’s some impressive company. He also scored 23 points off the bench on 9/13 shooting in the Rising Stars Challenge. Rookies like Porzingis, Mudiay, Hezonja, Booker, and Russell had their marks all over this game.
The All-Star was a memorable one, with it being Kobe Bryant’s last one. Lots of laughs and talks. Paul George beat Carmelo Anthony’s record for most 3-pointers in in an All-Star game at 9, but fell short at beating Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 42 points with 41. Russell Westbrook won his second All-Star MVP in a row. We got to see a little Kobe – LeBron 1v1. When we all thought it was over, Steph Curry drops a half-court 3-pointer with a couple seconds left in the game.
With all the fun being over, it seems like Zach Lavine is convincing people to stop sleeping on him. Devin Booker gives the Suns a bright spot in their dark future. Even though he lost, I would still love to see Aaron Gordon back at next year’s Slam Dunk Contest. LeBron and Kobe Bryant have played their last game together. (Let that hit you for a second) Much respect to all the winners, and the losers, and I hope to see the same level of excitement next season in Charlotte.
